New Consumer Units

Domestic & Commerical Consumer Units

Consumer Units also know as Distribution Boards or Fuse Boards should be inspected every 5 years if it is a rented property. Part of the inspection and testing process includes removing the cover to inspect the inside of the consumer unit to determine if there is any over loading or if arcing has occurred. These are the main causes of house fires. Loose connections can cause conductors to burn, especially under heavy loads. Incorrect fuses/MCBS for specific cable sizes could over load the cable with no protection, this will cause the cable to burn and cause a house fire. To help mitigate these problems a thorough inspection and test should be carried out and a consumer unit installed that meets the current 18th Edition AMD 2 Regulations. The new regulations required a metal clad consumer unit with 30mA RCD protection. RCD’s or residual current devices are devices that fit into the consumer unit and monitor the incoming and outgoing current. If there is an 30mA difference in current caused by earth leakage the device will disconnect the circuit. RCBO’s or RCD’s protect all persons from acquiring an electrical shock and help stop fires.
